James Campbell and Kurt Kroese successfully won a $2,620,000 verdict in favor of a family of a woman, Hansa Patel, who died from a bleeding ulcer while in St. Joseph's Hospital. Jim and Kurt represented her husband, Naran Patel, and their three adult sons.
In April 2016, while in St. Joseph's Hospital, Hansa was diagnosed with a large, bleeding ulcer in her small intestine. While in the hospital, the ulcer bleed severely at least 3 times. On the final bleed, April 23, 2016, Hansa's stomach filled with blood, which caused her to vomit and aspirate blood. This caused a deadly lung injury, which ultimately caused her death on May 29, 2016.
The family brought a medical malpractice case against Dr. Deeb, alleging he failed to reasonably care for Hansa Patel and as a result, her ulcer was allowed to continue to bleed, which caused her death. The case went to trial in the Pima County Superior court before Hon. Michael Butler.
On Tuesday, the jury, by unanimous verdict, found that Dr. Deeb failed to reasonably treat the ulcer and prevent it from rebleeding. It ruled this was a cause of her death.
